We are lucky to house some wonderful local artisans in our original mill buildings, including a glass maker, a silversmith, a blacksmith, two artists, and a florist. There are regular demonstrations and workshops, and some beautiful and unique works to purchase.
Why not visit them and find out more about their unique, handmade and handcrafted items.
Mill Yard Studio Gallery
The Gallery is set in one of the old stables in the Mill Yard. As well as work by the resident artists Jenny and Jo (see below for more information), there are regular exhibitions by guest artists, potters and jewellers.
Jenny McKenzie
I am an abstract impressionist artist based at The Mill Yard Studio Gallery at Caudwells Mill, Rowsley, Derbyshire. My work is inspired by my life and surroundings. I use colour, variable perspective and scale to create abstract impressionist work that finds a juxtaposition between ‘place’ in real time and the feelings and emotions evoked by it. I strive to produce vibrant works of art that have clarity of colour and light but leave a sense of interpretation to the onlooker.

Jo Spencer
My mosaics take inspiration from nature and the hills and dales that surround me and utilise vintage, damaged and unwanted crockery – a process called ‘Picassiette”. I hope, by using this technique, to reinvent the beauty of these items and preserve the designs and patterns. Each placed piece acts like a brushstroke, and is carefully positioned to create depth, form and texture.

Rock, Paper, Silver
Using the lost wax casting technique Rebecca Green is a silversmith creating tiny solid silver sculptures that can be worn as jewellery. During the process of casting the mould each piece is broken resulting in a completely unique piece. All of Rebecca’s jewellery is designed and hand crafted in her workshop at Caudwell’s Mill Rowsley. Rebecca draws inspiration from the local landscape and British wildlife. While working on her own jewellery collections, she also makes bespoke pieces such as sculptured pet portraits from photos to create a perpetual memory that will be treasured for years to come.

Florist – Arbutus and Ivy
“Our style is inspired by the natural beauty of an English country garden. Each handcrafted design evokes the ‘just walked through the garden and picked a bouquet’ look, whether that be one of our whimsical ‘little bags of joy’ or one of our refined and elegant bouquets.
We believe good floral design will live on in the memory even after the blooms have faded.
We pride ourselves on a good old fashioned friendly service, in addition we offer a selection of silk flowers, seasonal plants and decorative items for the home”.
Local delivery is available, please call us before 12pm for same day delivery.
Blacksmith – Robert Brown
Bob established Mill Forge at Caudwell’s Mill over 25 years ago. He is a highly skilled and experienced Blacksmith, and as well as producing items such as fire-tools, weathervanes, curtain poles and brackets, he is happy to take on more specialised commissioned work: “The thrill of replicating or restoring something centuries old has never waned.” Visitors are welcome to pop into the forge and see Bob at work and chat to him about his varied and long career as a Blacksmith and creative mechanic.
